It is colorful, joyful, Christmas trees have been shining in the windows for a long time, Santas ride on the facades of the houses, the stars are shining, the green and red lights flash. It's wonderful, fairytale, though a bit commercially. But not everyone is a born artist and can design the December illumination of the house. Anyway, Christmas reality is screaming from everywhere!
The time has come for joy, meeting friends, sipping Eggnog together, giving gifts, often made by themselves. It is also a time to write greeting cards, short letters, send packages to loved ones and a bit further. There are holiday sweaters, scarves, hats, jewelry with snowmen or other Christmas symbols, even on cars ... It is also time to bake cookies for neighbors, colleagues, friends. I do it myself with undisguised pleasure (except this year, after all the flu appeared in the least expected moment, even my doggy is ill). Yes, yes, various cookies at Christmas time are very popular, and traditionally they are baked by ladies at home with their children, friends, and grandmothers ... And although most of them are known throughout America, each state has its favorite, baked mainly once a year, in this special, illuminated time. They contain a lot of nuts, dried fruit, spices, chocolate ... They taste delicious, especially those from old, grandma's or mother's recipes.
In the next year, I will try to bake all, from all states, to check which are the tastiest ... and share with you cookie stories. I suspected a few, tried several and I already know that it will be interesting and delicious.
Generally speaking, Americans do not celebrate Christmas Eve, and if even ... it is completely different from our native, fasting, the only one of the year. Christmas Time is one day - December 25 - starting with a meeting under the Christmas tree with a mug of milk, hot cocoa or chocolate and a platter of cookies, which Santa was also treated to. A plate of cookies and a cup of milk for the injured Santa appears in almost every home late on the evening of December 24. Of course, Santa usually drinks milk and savor cookies, leaving gifts under the Christmas tree, sometimes under the pillow of
a sleeping child ... Nice habit! After the general "pajamas" joy of gifts received and a quick breakfast, there is preparation for the Christmas dinner, in the family circle, friends, acquaintances ... In my family home, where my beloved mother from Vilnius, was served on the Christmas, festive goose or turkey. They were always delicious, with a crunchy crust, which was "fought" at the family table. Christmas Eve was a sign of deep-fried dumplings filled with mushrooms and cabbage and very small, crunchy, sweet cookies from Vilnius (tradition!) which were baked in my family home an amazing amount. They were eaten instead of nuts, which were scarcely or not at all, and hung on the Christmas tree in the form of attractions. And the dumplings? So prepared, they taste absolutely delicious, which is why the dumpling plates with fried (not cooked) dumplings disappeared from the table in the blink of an eye. And we've been waiting for these two dishes all year ... and I wish everyone this - wonderful, magical, family Christmas. And let it happen regardless of what appears on your tables. Whether it will be in Polish, American or from the other end of the world, it doesn't matter. If the Good Spirit sits between you, it will be great. Invite him to yourself!
