MOTHER'S DAY

AND THREE DESSERTS

Clubs for women were created in the nineteenth century in the state of West Virginia. Their was initiated Ann Reeves Jarvis. They were taught raising children, keeping families clean, and considering reducing infant mortality.

During the Civil War, women helped wounded soldiers from both camps ... After the war, organized picnics unifying loyalists Union and Confederate, promote peace and tranquility for all ...

They demanded also the understanding of their motherhood, respect, partnership ... On the pages of history signed up (among others) Julia Ward Howe - launched a Mother's Peace Day, which began to organize locally in different states..

At the beginning of the 20th century, Ann Jarvis (daughter of Ann Reeves Jarvis) joined the group of activists for women-mothers. She also organized clubs for women with similar problems, she also demanded respect for their hard efforts in raising children and keeping the home. After the death of her mother (May 10, 1908) she sent 500 white carnations to the church in Grafton (West Virginia) for funerals. Similar celebrations took place in Philadelphia, Ann's residence. This day, symbolically, is considered the first Mother's Day in the United States ...

Ann did not stop in her actions for all Mothers in the country to see the recognition and proclamation of Mother's Day by President Woodrow Wilson (9 May 1914). Officially, the American Mother's Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of May, and the white carnation have been replaced with every Mom's favorite flowers.

Grilled Strawberries Over Vanilla Ice Cream

INGREDIENTS:

1/4 cup balsamic vinegar

1 cup dark brown sugar

24 medium fresh, organic strawberries

4 pieces fresh rosemary

Mom's favorite vanilla ice cream

SPECIAL EQUIPMENT:

 eight 10-inch wooden or bamboo skewers, soaked in water at least 15 minutes

PREPARATION:

  • Wash strawberries, leave the stems, dry.

  • Strawberries pour balsamic vinegar, each coat in sugar and place on skewers stick in the form of.

  • Grill the strawberries until they are softened and have grill marks, 3 to 4 minutes per side (you can bake them in the oven 200°C (400°F).

  • Serve warm with the addition of vanilla ice cream.

ABOUT THE RECIPE:

  • These strawberries are also a great addition to salads, baked meat ... but first try with ice cream!

Grilled Plums with Ginger-

-Balsamic Glaze

INGREDIENTS:

8 large plums
1/8 cup balsamic vinegar
2 heaped spoon of dark brown sugar
1 teaspoon ground ginger
1 tablespoon olive oil
pinch of salt

PREPARATION:

  • A grill or oven preheat to 200°C (400°F).

  • Thoroughly wash the plums, halve lengthwise, remove the seeds.

  • In a pan mix the oil, vinegar, and sugar, cook a few minutes until the sauce thickens a little.

  • Pour plums on the sauce, leave for 5 minutes.

  • Plums grill or bake for 10-15 minutes.

  • Cool, put in the fridge; remove from cooling 15 minutes before serving.

  • They are also excellent warm with the addition of vanilla or rum ice cream.

Spiced baked apples

INGREDIENTS:

4 medium sour apples (Green Granny Smith)

1/4 cup sugar

50 grams of dried figs, finely cut

35 grams of dried apricots, finely cut

30 grams of almonds peeled, cut into strips

1 tablespoon apricot jam

1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom

1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

30 grams butter

PREPARATION:

  • Preheat oven to 180°C (375°F).

  • Wash apples, peel halfway (starting with the apple's tail), gently hollow the center, coat each apple with sugar.

  • In a bowl mix the figs, apricots, almonds, jam, cinnamon, and cardamom.

  • Fill the apples with fruit stuffing, put a piece of butter on each.

  • Bake 35-40 minutes, until the apples are soft.

  • Serve warm with ice cream or whipped cream.

ABOUT THE RECIPE:

  • The apple from the photo has a different stuffing - honey, crushed almonds, candied ginger, ginger syrup. 

  • An excellent stuffing for apples is a thick cranberry sauce, covered with brown sugar. With the addition of ice cream is a great dessert for Thanksgiving Day.
